There is a certain beauty about this dim and overgrown swamp. A female figure pushes a boat through the still, shallow water, the light of a single lantern barely illuminating the way before her. She doesn’t seem quite human. What is she? Does she belong to this wet, shadowy world, or is she just a stranger passing through? Where did she come from, and where is she going?
When I look at this picture I see a character out of time. She once belonged to the world, a vibrant character who brightened those around her and shaped much of history. But time moved on, and gradually she realized the world no longer safeguarded a place for her. Troubled by the constant struggle to maintain the borders of her own little corner, she chose to retreat, into this place where the modern world would not intrude, because they did not want any part of “this place”.
So in one sense she’s an outsider, but she’s been here so long that she’s become part of this place, a living legacy from a world that only lives on in stories, and her memories. Once in a while a lone adventurer or a small group may cross her path, seeking safe passage through her home. Along the way they offer some glimpse of how things have changed, enough to satisfy her curiosity, and remind her why she continues to live in self imposed exile.
