In writing, we’re told to “kill our darlings” and get rid of the bits of writing we love if they don’t serve the story.

And just because something doesn’t belong in “this story” doesn’t mean you can’t use it in another story, or build one around it. When so many search for inspiration I like to keep every idea I can hold onto, jotting them down in computer files full of random bits of flotsam.
