Here the battle began…and here it ended. Years have passed, time and weather eating away at the memorial banners and even the metal on the blades that were once wielded in protection of these lands. Wielded by honorable men that once fought beside him. Years have passed, but in his mind, the battle goes on. How he managed to survive when so many of his brothers fell, is a bitter miracle he’s still trying to understand. He gazes into the distance, up into the snowy hills from where the enemy once crashed down upon them like a raging torrent. The landscape is quiet once again, but will it remain so? And for how long?

Sunlight streams down into the snow covered forest, though the sun’s warm appearance is deceiving. The air is cold and crisp, numbing faces and fingers, and leaving the breath of people and horses hanging visibly on the air. A noblewoman makes her way slowly through the trees, quiet and dignified. She is accompanied by members of her household; attendants, servants, and soldiers to protect them on their journey. They proudly display the banners of her fiefdom as they go, but no one is nearby to see them. Why is she taking such a remote and difficult path rather than a well traveled road? And what journey is important enough to have pressed her out into this frozen winter landscape?

Darkness begins to close in on this harsh and frigid landscape. The snow is deep, shaped by the mountain winds into lofty drifts that rise up over men’s heads. Spring will reveal the frozen corpses of the unlucky, and the foolish–those who thought they could press on and reach the other side before succumbing to the cold.

But you are no fool. The door of the Great Hall beckons, its timber frame offering life-saving shelter and warmth. From the open doorway, the enticing smell of roasting meat carries toward you on the wind. Your stomach growls and your mouth waters in anticipation. As you get closer, the sounds of music and laughter emerge as well. You head for an opening in the spiked wooden enclosure, the path already pressed down by those who entered before you. You look forward to a night of fellowship. Who will you meet, and what new songs and tales will you hear? Which ones will you share in return?

It’s a glorious night. The moon illuminates the landscape  and the stars swirl through the sky in a bright, fiery dance. This alignment of the constellations won’t come around again for hundreds of years. It is on such nights when myths come alive, when the unbelievable is believable–when anything can happen. Your travels have brought you this place–a cliff overlooking rushing waters and forests bathed in mist and shadow. Why have you come here on this night of all nights? What will happen next? Only you can tell…

It took weeks on foot to get here, climbing steep trails through unforgiving wilderness. But the punishing journey is just as much a part of the pilgrimage as the majestic heights and glorious views. The spirit soars; the mind and body are broken, until you fall to your knees in awe and humility at a doorway that seems to be a gateway to the very end of the world. Who waits to welcome you, and what mysteries do you find on the other side?

Soft, blue light filters down from above, illuminating this mysterious underwater city. The schools of fish swimming overhead would seem to be the only life if not for the train slowly moving along the tracks. Who might be inside?  Is this a place of the past–a sunken city now inhabited by sea life and haunted by memory? Or is it a place of myth, where mermaids play?

A stone angel rises from the earth–a forgotten wonder buried in a forgotten forest. The lantern’s flame burns on, age after age, extinguished by neither wind nor rain. The animals are drawn as though the angel sings to them in a voice only they can hear. Would people be drawn just the same? How did this angel get here…and what power does it hold?
