Here’s a little something for those of you who like to tell a darker tale. Certainly there are no fairies lurking here, and no magical sunbeams are breaking through the oppressive gray blanket overhead. Everything about this dirty, dilapidated cobbled street puts your nerves on edge–this is not a welcoming place. Any type of villain could be lurking in the shadows, with a sharp dagger and a quick hand, ready to grab anything of value off the still warm body lying at his feet. The hanging light draws you toward those open doors, leading to where? I envision a rough tavern full of unsavory characters. A place to perhaps glean information, hire an assassin, or make deals that had best not come out into the light of day. Who will you send down these streets, and through the doors? And what will they find on the other side?

This week’s artwork has me peering into the shadows for signs of fairies–I can imagine they would hang out in a place like this. But really, what draws me is that arch at the center. Though it is formed from elements in the landscape, it seems purposefully made rather than natural. So why is it there? Is it simply a thing of beauty, or is there something magical about it?

My personal suspicion is that the archway is more than it appears to be…that if I walk through it, I won’t come out into that light filled clearing on the other side, but some other place entirely. The possibilities are limited only by my imagination; that archway could take me absolutely anywhere.  Where will it take you?

Last week’s artwork took us deep underwater to a silent city. This city by contrast is full of life. There is plenty going on in this bustling place, with its somewhat exotic architecture and canals with boats. In the background there is a statue that seems to be commemorating a significant person, or event, in history. What does the flag he’s holding signify? A moment of victory securing freedom? Or perhaps these people are conquerers. Either way, it seems to be a prosperous place, with the buildings in good repair, and well dressed people moving at a leisurely pace along the streets. What details stand out to you as you look at this image? Let your imagination come up with a story for this place; its people, history, lore…and its future.

There are many tall tales and myths about underwater cities–whole civilizations, whether still bustling with activity, or lost and forgotten, domed to provide air, or open to the water, defying what we know of reality.

The city in this image looks deserted. Was it once above ground, now sunk below the water? Or was it built here on purpose, and by who? Mer-people? Humans who have found a means to adapt, or beings we have yet to conceive of?

Plunge into the depths of blue and explore what this underwater world has to offer. From pillar to archway, there is plenty to stir the imagination.

This ancient forest looks as though it could come alive at any moment, doesn’t it? I can almost see a face peering out from the bark of the tree. It is warily watching the lone traveler as he passes by. He doesn’t seem to be anxious, or even in a hurry. Perhaps he knows this place, and its secrets, well enough. Is the flock of birds traveling with him, scouting out the road ahead? Are they residents of the forest, or are they watching him too? There’s bound to be a story here, calling out from the mist. Can you hear it?

Last week’s image was so peaceful and green. By stark contrast, this valley is completely barren. Nothing grows here…except apparently dragons. You can see them emerging from what seems to be a cold mist. The smell of damp stone, mud, and foul water greets my nose, along with smoke and scorched earth.

Is this narrow place the dragons’ safe haven from would-be hunters, where they have the advantage of a clear line of sight? There doesn’t seem to be anywhere to hide. Perhaps it is only a nesting area for young dragons. They remain here until they are old enough to fly off and settle in distant regions, seeking treasure to hoard.

What is on the other side of the mountains framing our view? More of the same? Burnt countryside? Or green slopes and fields, tended by a few brave souls who dare to live so close to danger? If the creatures are a danger at all. (Your world, your rules.)

Whether these dragons are despised or revered, there is sure to be plenty of lore surrounding this rocky valley. What rumors have you heard in your travels? We’re all waiting expectantly to hear a good tale…

OK, I GIVE UP!!! Trying to schedule this ahead (like I do every week) and WordPress is having some kind of meltdown. It refuses to schedule my post, and is just publishing it. So, I guess that means it is Wednesday–enjoy my post a day early. 🙂

Beautiful and solemn, this image draws my gaze upward and makes me feel like I’m in an elven cathedral. I can almost hear the gentle lapping of the water and the sound of the oar being pulled slowly through it. There are a variety of songbirds calling from tree to tree, but otherwise, this is a quiet place. Who is the hooded figure? As the boat approaches the arched entrance, what is waiting on the other side? Are those buildings, or markers? Monuments or grave stones? Light is shining through the canopy onto what looks like a young tree or maybe something more mysterious. At this distance it is hard to tell, but whatever it is, it seems significant.

Could you travel to this place, if only you knew the way? Or is it in another realm…one that only exists beyond life as we know it? Let your eyes explore the intricate swirls of the gateway, and take in the soft, peaceful glow, as your mind explores the many possibilities.
