She stands at the water’s edge…waiting. Waves swirl and churn against the rocks, sending up spray that leaves glistening beads on her hair and clothes. In the distance, dark clouds begin to gather over the water and the wind picks up. The pungent salt-smell of the sea mingles with the scent of the coming rain. Let it fall. Her legs are planted firmly against the stone beneath her feet as she grips her staff tightly in hand. She will continue to wait until the dark of night and the encroaching tide force her to retreat. What is she waiting for? Something that will come to her across the water…or up from its murky depths?

A lone warrior stands on the river bank, sword at the ready. Through the shifting white mist he sees the enemy. They’re coming. The dense fog is hiding the full size of their force, but he already knows he’s greatly outnumbered. Even so, he must stand firm. The lives of everyone he cares about are dependent upon his strength and cunning. He must hold the enemy back as long as he can. No doubt they have already sized him up and think their victory will be an easy one. But he has a surprise planned for them the moment they hit the river. Will he manage to prevail in spite of the odds? Or are these deep breaths of morning mist destined to be his last?

A wolf sits in wait by the grave of his master; a warrior in life, a hero in death. All around the stone are the swords his comrades set in place to honor him, and to pledge their continued loyalty. Each man is ready to take their sword back up and swear their fealty anew when they meet again in the next life. Yet as the days and weeks pass, each one of them eventually departs. There are more battles to fight, and life must continue. Not for the wolf.

Many out of concern tried to lure him into the living world with them, offering food, and affection. But a wolf only has one master, and his told him to never leave his side. And so the wolf waits. Death is meaningless. He knows what the others do not–what no human could. The ancient lore of his kind says that there is no more sacred bond than that between a wolf and a worthy master. Loyalty beyond reason, beyond hope, even beyond death, will be rewarded.

As he waits alone in the dark of the night, a light suddenly shines all around. It does not come from the distant moon, nor from any light made by man. The wolf watches warily as a bright beam shoots out from the stone itself. A vague form appears, though he cannot make out what it is just yet. Something is finally happening…are the promises of the ancient lore finally coming to pass?

It is said that deep beneath the ocean waves lies a ship, once made of wood, and rope, and sail…but now only a ghostly vision. It lights the waves before it like fire, leaving dread and darkness in its wake. The rumors say it is cursed; forced to re-trace its doomed voyage for all eternity. Maybe you’ve heard what transgression committed by its captain and crew brought on such a curse. None of the stories seem to agree. Only take care not to go chasing after it, for those who do are doomed to share its fate, sinking down into the inky depths of the sea.

Fantasy Art Friday

Few have been to this pristine valley, its vibrant greens hemmed in by cold, white mountains that are nearly impossible to scale. Animals graze here, taking leisurely drinks from the streams. They’ve not had to learn the fear of hunters.

There are plenty of legends about this place–the kind told over frothy mugs in smoky taverns. How many of those tales are inspired more by ale than truth no one really knows. But on one thing all of the stories seem to agree; that this beautiful country is not as empty as it would seem, nor is it friendly to strangers. Any who attempt to settle here come to an unpleasant end, for the tall mountains conceal the homes of those who have lived beneath them for thousands of years…and they want to keep them concealed for thousands more. With their own hands they set the round stones in the stream. Giant hands, placing stepping stones for giant feet to cross from one side to the other. 

Are you content to swap tales in the safety of the tavern, mug of ale in hand? Or are you the adventurous type who can’t rest until you find out for yourself if the legends are true? Do you dare to venture across the giant stepping stones?

Light streams gently down, illuminating this quiet city carved from spacious caverns. Still, deep, and cold, underground lakes and rivers have become the most convenient thoroughfares to get from place to place. The tumultuous world above seems distant, as though nothing more than a memory, or a myth. How large is this hidden world? Is it one small city, or an entire, vast network of them, all connected by waterways? Who lives here, and how did they come to live here in the first place? Let your imagination find the answers.

This image depicts a tale we’re all familiar with…Santa, the reindeer, the sleigh full of gifts…flying high in the night sky on a snowy Christmas eve. Is this dreamy landscape part of the North Pole? Or maybe someplace a bit more fantastical? Imagine Santa–or some version of him–visiting the various worlds of our imaginations. What sort of magical twist could we bring to this classic story? Are you up to the challenge fellow writers?  If so, pick up your pens and create your own version of who is in that sleigh, what it might be carrying, and to whom.
